Zhang Lab The Worm Lab at OUHSC

Inspiring Future Scientists at Red Oak Elementary!

Red Oak Elementary’s STEM Night was a wonderful evening filled with curiosity, creativity, and hands-on learning for students and families alike. As one of the volunteer groups participating in the event, the Zhang Lab was excited to introduce students to Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), a tiny roundworm widely used as a model organism in scientific research. Through fun and interactive activities—including coloring pages, trivia games with prizes, 3D puzzle building, and live microscope observations—students learned about the worm’s appearance, life cycle, and importance in biological research while exploring science in an engaging way.

We are especially grateful to Dr. Lurdes Queimado and her team for their generous support and assistance throughout the event. Their dedication and hard work played an essential role in making the evening such a great success. We loved sharing the excitement of science with the community and hope the event inspired many future young scientists!
